Amazing news. We just learned that the Conversion Bill will not go to vote this Wednesday – a huge success! You deserve a gigantic thank you. Because of your overwhelming opposition, MK Rotem realized that he did not have the support to pass the Conversion Bill at this time. Thank you to all of the organizations and movements worldwide, to all who sent thousands of letters, faxes, and phone calls, and to all who spread the word to your friends, family, and congregants about the dangers of this bill. It was an incredibly important fight, and the government listened to us – nothing demonstrates the power of global grassroots efforts and advocacy more than this success.
I would also like to thank by name the IMPJ/IRAC staff members who worked tirelessly these past two weeks – lobbyist Loren Puris, attorney and Legal Aid Center for Olim Director Nicki Maor-Center, Attorney Riki Shapira Rosenberg, Media Liaison Yuli Goren, Associate Director Noa Sattath, and all of IRAC’s communications and administrative staff. I would especially like to thank the director of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism, Rabbi Gilad Kariv, who led this entire effort.
Although it is cliché, we have won the battle, but not yet the war. When Knesset reconvenes after the High Holy Days, the fight will start all over again, as the bill has only been postponed, not defeated completely – but we know we can count on you to mobilize and stop the bill when the time is necessary. And, believe it or not, in spite of this bill, we have been busy with other things here at IRAC. This past Tuesday, we organized a special conference in the Knesset about the Western Wall (Kotel), addressing the steadily growing strictness imposed by the ultra-Orthodox over the Wall itself as well as the surrounding area. Through our efforts, members of Knesset and Progressive Jewish leaders spoke in favor of greater tolerance and pluralism at this sacred site that is so important to men and women from all Jewish streams. Be sure to read the article about this groundbreaking day in Knesset.
While we are incredibly busy, the Jewish calendar does not stop, and tonight marks the beginning of Tisha Ba’av. For a beautiful teaching on how the struggle over the Conversion Bill connects to Tisha Ba’av, please be sure to read ARZA Executive Director Rabbi Danny Allen’s moving D’var Torah. Though we succeeded in stopping the bill, Rabbi Allen’s teachings remain applicable as we continue our fight for religious pluralism and tolerance in Israel and around the world, and for a unified Jewish people. auf diesem Weg möchte auch ich Euch für die Unterstützung unserer gemeinsamen Aktion gegen das „Rotem-Gesetz“ danken. Wie Ihr vielleicht schon aus der Presse erfahren habt, hatte sich Benjamin Netanyahu schon Anfang der Woche gegen das Gesetz ausgesprochen und der „Erfinder“ des Gesetzes, MK Rotem hat es dann auf Grund des massiven Drucks zurückgezogen.
Ich kann Euch leider zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht sagen, ob wir einen vollen, oder nur einen Teilerfolg erzielt haben. Dazu ist die derzeitige Regierung in Jerusalem zu unberechenbar, ABER, wir haben allen Fraktionen in der Knesset gezeigt, dass uns die Einheit aller Juden am Herzen liegt und wir dafür auch lautstark eintreten. Wir sind keine kleine Minderheit, sonder wir sind die Mehrheit.
Für die Kampagne haben wir viel Zuspruch erhalten. Von Freunden, Förderern, von liberalen, konservativen und auch von orthodoxen Jüdinnen und Juden. - Ein modernes Eherecht, dass den zukünftigen Partnern die eigene Wahl über das Wie und Wo einräumt;
- Gleiches Schulsystem für alle Kinder in Israel, keine Sonderbehandlung von Kindern aus ultra-orthodoxen Familien, da diese ihnen eine allgemeine Schulbildung vorenthält;
- Abbau von Diskriminierungen von Palästinensern, die innerhalb der Grenzen Israels leben möchten und eine aktive Friedenspolitik mit allen Nachbarn in der Region;
- und und und.

Dringender Aufruf um Unterstützung: Briefkampagne gegen das „Rotem-Gesetz“
Liebe Freunde,
In wenigen Tagen, am 9. Av, erinnern wir an die Zerstörung unserer beiden antiken Tempel. Einer der Gründe, den das klassische Judentum für die Zerstörung benennt, war die Avera, die Sünde, Sinat Chinam, der Streit, der Hass und die Spaltung innerhalb des damaligen Judentums. Vor wenigen Tagen, am 1. Av, gab es zwei Vorfälle, die unsere Sorge um die Einheit des Judentums, weiter wachsen lässt:
1. Der Gesetzesentwurf (Rotem-Gesetz), der die Anerkennung von Übertritten in des Judentum alleine in die Hände des ultra-orthodoxen Oberrabbinates verschieben soll, und damit vielen liberalen, nicht orthodoxen Juden eine Aliya nach Israel unmöglich machen wird, hat einen weiteren Schritt zur Gesetzeskraft erlangt. Wenn wir das Gesetzesvorhaben nicht stoppen können, befürchten wir eine Spaltung des Judentums. Ultra-Orthodoxe Juden werden versuchen die Vielfallt jüdischen Lebens weiter zu zerstören. Gerade in einer Zeit, in der Israel gegen viele Kämpfen muss, die die Existenz des Staates in Frage stellen, ist es fatal und ein falsches Signal, so viele Jüdinnen und Juden weltweit zu de-legitimieren.

2. Trauriger Weise passierte dieser Vorgang zeitgleich mit der Verhaftung von Anat Hoffmann (Direktorin des Israel Religious Action Center und Gründerin der „Women of the Wall) für das Tragen einer Torah-Rolle von der Kotel zum Robinson Arch.
arzenu, Masorti Deutschland, Meretz Deutschland, Mercaz und die Union progressiver Juden in Deutschland, haben gemeinsam einen Aufruf verfasst, in dem wir unsere Sorgen und Bedenken zum Ausdruck bringen. Der Gesetzentwurf verleiht einer Minderheit das Recht darüber zu bestimmen, wer jüdisch ist, und damit Bürger des Landes werden kann. Der Staat wird zu einem Geisel der Ultraorthodoxie. In der jüdischen Geschichte gab es niemals eine vergleichbare Machtkonzentrierung. Und es sollte sie auch niemals geben. Die jüdische Stärke liegt in ihrer Vielfallt und Pluralität.
Bitte unterstützt uns in unserem Protest gegen diese traurige Entwicklung:
- Verteilt bitte diesen Aufruf an Eure Mitglieder, Freunde und Unterstützer und bittet darum, dass sie sich dem Protest anschließen.
- Gemeinsam mit unseren Schwester- und Partnerorganisationen in Israel und Weltweit, appellieren wir an die Israelische Regierung, ihr Gesetzesvorhaben zu stoppen. Wir wollen der Regierung Netanyahu verdeutlichen, dass bei einem solch wichtigen Gesetzesvorhaben, Vertreterinnen und Vertreter des Diasporajudentums und aller Strömungen gehört werden müssen. Schließt Euch bitte mit eigenen Aktionen an.
- Und wir glauben, dass jede Stimme, die die Regierung in den nächsten Tagen erreichen wird, ein wichtiger Beitrag hierzu ist. In der Anlage zu dem Brief befindet sich ein Musterbrief an den israelischen Botschafter in Deutschland und an den israelischen Ministerpräsidenten Benjamin Netanyahu. Jeder Brief, jedes Fax, welcher/welches den Ministerpräsidenten und den Botschafter erreicht, kann ausschlaggebend sein.
Wir lernen aus dem Talmud, dass Tisha be Av (der 9. Av) einst ein fröhlicher Tag war und in der messianischen Zeit auch wieder sein wird. Wir können unseren Beitrag dazu leisten, dem Ziel einer friedlicheren Welt näher zu kommen, in dem wir uns gegen Hass, Ausgrenzung und Spaltung stellen.

Today appeared to be an excellent day for the ultra-Orthodox hegemony here in Israel.
Before 9 AM, I was arrested for carrying a sefer Torah on the women’s side of the Western Wall. At the same time just miles away, the conversion bill – that would change forever the definition of who is a Jew in Israel – passed its first vote in the Knesset.
The ultra-Orthodox are applauding the events of today. They succeeded in preventing women from carrying a Torah and praying at the holiest site of the Jewish people, and they moved one step closer to erasing all recognition ever achieved for Reform and Conservative conversion in Israel.
It seems like it was a good day for them, and they may be celebrating. But in fact today was a dark day for the ultra-Orthodox in Israel, and for those working against religious pluralism and civil rights around the world. The real outcome of their “victories” will be the enlivening of the 85% of Diaspora Jewry, which is non-Orthodox, belonging in large part to the Reform or Conservative Movement.
The events of today bring to light the moral bankruptcy of the antiquated, violent, and intolerant Judaism that defines the ultra-Orthodox strand of Judaism in Israel today. This stands in contrast to our progressive Judaism that is committed to the equality inherent in every individual – man or woman, Jew by birth or Jew by choice.
There is an expression that I love – we must learn to walk and chew gum at the same time. I and the other leaders of the Israeli Reform Movement will take care of things on the ground here in Israel – the police, the courts, the Knesset. Now you must take care of the Conversion bill.
In the next 24 hours, send the attached letter demanding that the Israeli government listen to our voice, our unified voice calling for a Judaism of openness and tolerance. This is not an issue affecting only converts – it is an issue that threatens the very unity of the Jewish people. Today starts the countdown of your moving into action to reject this dangerous brand of Judaism. Our voices will be heard, and through all of us working together, the ultra-Orthodox “victories” of today will prove obsolete.

We write to request your immediate intervention to prevent passage of the legislation being brought forward by MK David Rotem.
We are deeply concerned about the intention to grant the Chief Rabbinate sole control over conversion in Israel. Such legislation would be an open attack on the legitimacy of non-Orthodox Jewry, which composes the majority of world Jewry.
While we are supportive of efforts to create greater accessibility to conversion courts in Israel, the overall impact of the Rotem Bill will set back these efforts. Should this bill be enacted, it will exacerbate a widening gap between Diaspora and Israel communities, which we are working very hard to avoid.
Therefore, we believe it is imperative that you, as leader of Israel, and as one who cares deeply about the well-being of Klal Yisrael, intervene and urge immediate withdrawal of this bill.

Likud and Israel Beiteinu voters want haredim out of government

The public will no longer tolerate selling Israel’s future to the haredi parties, Rabbi Uri Regev, director of Hiddush – For Religious Freedom and Equality in Israel, said on Wednesday, in response to a public opinion poll his NGO recently conducted.
The general public thinks the haredi community shows disrespect for and rejects democracy, according to the survey. Fifty-eight percent of the Jewish public supports the establishment of a national unity coalition government that would include Kadima, but not the the haredi Shas or United Torah Judaism parties.
The survey data “demonstrates unequivocally that the haredi parties managed to make themselves an anathema among the general public that supports the rule of law and democracy,” Regev said.
While 95% of secular Jews displayed an overall disapproval of the haredi community, a surprising 62% of modern Orthodox Jews expressed similar views.
“Israelis are no longer willing to accept the sale of Zionism and the future of Israel to the haredi parties through dubious political deals. It is time Prime Minister [Binyamin] Netanyahu heeds the cry of the people and establishes a national unity government capable of bringing about a sorely needed civil revolution,” Regev said.
According to the poll, 83% of the Jewish public considers the struggle by Ashkenazi haredi parents in Emmanuel to have their daughters study separately from Sephardi girls whose families do not follow Ashkenazi haredi practices unjust.
In addition, 75% of the population supports the High Court of Justice’s decision to eliminate income support funding for married yeshiva students from the 2011 state budget, saying the payments are discriminatory because there are no such payments for married secular students.
“The public is telling Netanyahu: You do not have a mandate to continue undermining equality by passing legislation that bypasses court rulings and provides ‘pork barrels’ and preferential grants to yeshiva students,” Regev said.
He continued, “You do not have a mandate to make kosher the despicable racism in education through fictitious compromises. This is the hour of urgency. Israel’s democratic and Zionist character is under assault. Netanyahu has to tell the haredi parties: Enough!” The poll reported that 83% of Likud voters and 100% of Israel Beiteinu voters condemned the Emmanuel struggle as anti-democratic, and 73% of Likud voters and 88% of Israel Beiteinu voters supported the court’s decision to halt the income support for married yeshiva students.
“Israel Beiteinu – whose main constituency is the new immigrant community that is the primary victim of the submission to the haredi parties – as well as the Labor Party, should stand firm and make it clear to Netanyahu that they will not be part of a government that subjects Zionism to suicide and exhibits serial surrender to haredi blackmail,” Regev said.
The public opinion survey, commissioned by Hiddush and conducted by Smith Research on June 27-28, was based on a sample of 500 respondents representing Israel’s adult Jewish population.

The public opinion survey, commissioned by Hiddush and conducted by Smith Research on June 27-28, was based on a sample of 500 respondents representing Israel’s adult Jewish population.
